Was getting away with crime during the medieval period extremely easy? With he lack of forensic evidence, investigative ability, and surveillance tools (cameras, microphones, etc); how did law enforcement deal with criminals who ran from the crime scene?

[Weird question] I've noticed that most great Soviet leaders were very short (Lenin - 5'5'', Stalin - 5'6'', Khrushchev - 5'3''). Coincidence or not? How were short men perceived in the USSR? Did Soviet culture somehow predispose shorter men to go into politics and public service?

Why is the area consisting of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island known as New England today? Why isn't somewhere settled earlier like Virginia or North Carolina considered part of it?
